69 (mutual oral sex) is well-loved, and what’s not to love? You’re pleasing your partner and getting pleasure yourself, which seems pretty ideal! But because every body is different and everybody has different preferences, there are lots of ways to enjoy 69-ing.
Keep reading for our top ten recommendations.
1. Classic 69
Classics get to be classics for a reason: they work, and they work for most people, and they work well. Most couples of all genders and sizes can enjoy the classic 69.

If there is a significant height difference between you and your partner, the taller bottom partner can use a sex pillow under their hips to raise them up so the shorter top partner enjoys better access.
What We’re Doing
- Partner 1 (the larger partner) lies on their back on the bed. They can use a firm cushion under their neck for support, or one under their hips to effectively shorten their torso if there is a notable height difference between partners.
- Partner 2 (the shorter partner) straddles Partner 1’s chest, facing their feet.
- Partner 2 backs up so that their genitals are aligned with Partner 1’s mouth, and leans forward so that their mouth is aligned with Partner 1’s genitals.
- Both partners perform oral sex on each other.
2. Inverted 69
In the classic 69, the larger partner is on the bottom, but in the inverted 69, the larger partner is on top. If you’re a couple who likes it a little rough, this may be a good choice for you because the larger/top partner is able to dominate the smaller partner.

As always, partners should check in with each other regularly because it is easy for the bottom partner to become overwhelmed in this position.
What We’re Doing
- Partner 1 (the smaller partner) lies on their back on the bed. We recommend placing a small, firm cushion under the head/neck to make breathing easier.
- Partner 2 (the larger partner) kneels straddling Partner 1’s chest. They can support some of their body weight on their legs.
- Partner 2 backs up so that their genitals are aligned with Partner 1’s mouth, and leans forward so that their mouth is aligned with Partner 1’s genitals.
- Both partners perform oral sex on each other.
3. Sex Swing 69
You’ll need a sex swing for this one, but if you can make it happen, it’s a purchase that you won’t regret. A sex swing is a great way to defy the laws of gravity and experience certain positions without having to support a partner’s body weight (or hold your own weight off your partner). This also makes it an excellent choice for folks with mobility challenges.

For 69 specifically, we recommend a sex swing for couples where there is a significant height/size difference between partners — let the swing do most of the work here!
What We’re Doing
- Adjust the straps on the sex swing so the seat is below waist height for Partner 1 (the taller partner).
- Partner 1 stands in front of the swing with legs slightly spread.
- Partner 2 (the smaller partner) lies in the swing with straps supporting their back, bottom, and legs.
- Partner 1 positions themself so that their genitals are aligned with Partner 2’s mouth, and bends forward so that their mouth is aligned with Partner #2’s genitals.
- Both partners perform oral sex on each other.
4. Sideways 69
A sideways 69 is a good choice when you’re both feeling the urge to play this way but neither is in the mood for athletic exertion.

Here, both partners get to lie comfortably on their sides and neither partner has to support the other’s body weight. It’s the same pleasurable and intimate experience, but with less back and neck strain!
What We’re Doing
- Partner 1 lies on their side on the bed. They can put a small, firm cushion between their knees to keep their legs spread.
- Partner 2 lies on their side facing Partner 1, but with their head at Partner 1’s feet and vice versa. They can also use a cushion between their knees if desired.
- Both partners position themselves so that their mouths are aligned with each other’s genitals.
- Partners perform oral sex on each other.
5. 69 With Sex Toy
Of course we are going to suggest including sex toys in your 69 (it’s what we do here at My Sex Toy Guide!) But there are plenty of good reasons to add wand vibrators and other toys to play time.

69 is super fun for everyone involved, but necks and tongues can sometimes benefit from a little break and toys are happy to be of service here.
What We’re Doing
- Get set up with your favorite toys (wand or bullet vibrators, penis strokers, and butt plugs all work well) and plenty of lube.
- Position yourselves in the sideways 69 as described above.
- Alternate between performing oral sex on each other and using sex toys to stimulate each other. You can even do both at the same time, especially with anal toys in the mix.
6. Standing 69
If the sideways 69 is the least demanding physically, this one is definitely the most! It’s worth a try for the thrill of it (and it is definitely thrilling!) but many couples find that they can’t hold this position from start to finish. This is fine, of course, because there are plenty of other ways to reach the finish line.

If you haven’t played this way before, we recommend that you “practice” in the seated position before standing up to ensure that you’re both comfortable with the dynamics (and the inversion).
What We’re Doing
- Partner 1 (the larger, stronger partner) sits on the edge of the bed or couch with their feet flat on the floor.
- Partner 2 (the smaller partner) sits upside-down on Partner 1’s lap with Partner 2’s knees over Partner 1’s shoulders.
- When both partners feel stable in this position, Partner 1 slowly stands up, supporting Partner 2’s body. Partner 2 wraps their arms around Partner 1’s back.
- Both partners perform oral sex on each other.
7. Squatting 69
In this version of 69, each partner supports their own body weight. This tends to allow more freedom of movement for both partners, and that can make the experience even more intense.

This also works fairly well when there is a size difference between partners because both partners can adjust their positioning.
What We’re Doing
- Partner 1 sits on the floor or bed with their legs in front of them, either straight or bent. Partner 1 can lean back and support themself with their arms.
- Partner 2 stands with their back to Partner 1 and squats down until their genitals are aligned with Partner 1’s mouth.
- Partner 2 leans forward so that their mouth is aligned with Partner 1’s genitals.
- Both partners perform oral sex on each other.
8. Threesome 69
This really isn’t a “69” and we aren’t quite sure what number to assign it, but if you’re in the midst of it, math is hopefully the last thing on your mind!

Threesomes can sometimes be tricky because there’s often one person feeling a little left out, but if you’re all giving and receiving oral sex, that’s no longer an issue! This position works the same way with any combination of genders.
What We’re Doing
- Partner 1 lies on their side on the bed.
- Partner 2 lies on their side at a 60-degree angle (ack, math resurfaces!) to Partner 1, with Partner 1’s mouth aligned with Partner 2’s genitals.
- Partner 3 lies on their side at a 60-degree angle to both Partner 1 and Partner 2 (there are 180 degrees in a triangle, so the three 60-degree angles create an equilateral triangle), with Partner 2’s mouth aligned with Partner 3’s genitals and Partner 3’s mouth aligned with Partner 1’s genitals.
- All partners both give and receive oral sex.
9. The 68
This is otherwise known as “you do me and I’ll owe you one” — and that’s often just fine! There’s nothing wrong with alternating a focus on each other in a healthy relationship; just check in with each other and, of course, make sure that your partner gets their turn!

What We’re Doing
- The giving partner lies on their back on the bed with their knees bent. They can put a firm cushion under their neck for support.
- The receiving partner lies on their back on top of the giving partner, with their head towards the giving partner’s feet.
- The receiving partner lies back against the giving partner’s knees and aligns their genitals with the giving partner’s mouth.
- The giving partner performs oral sex on the receiving partner.
10. Face Sitting
This is another version of “68” where the receiving partner is the one in control of the situation. It can be a change of pace for the woman to be on top and in charge here, but this position also works with any combination of genders as long as the giving partner is comfortable being dominated.

What We’re Doing
- The giving partner lies on their back on the bed with legs stretched out in front. They can put a small, firm cushion under their neck for support and a better breathing angle.
- The receiving partner kneels straddling the giving partner’s chest, with their legs on either side of the giving partner’s shoulders. The receiving partner can support some of their weight on their legs.
- The receiving partner moves forward so that their genitals are aligned with the giving partner’s mouth.
- The giving partner performs oral sex on the receiving partner.
