How to Clean Lovense Max 2? PRO TIPS From A Sex Toy Tester!

Lovense sex toys are truly investments in our sexual health and self-care, and like other investments, they deserve to be cared for and maintained. Part of that is cleaning them after every use. Tim Larson is one of our sex toy testers as well as our pleasure tech expert, and he is here to talk about how to clean the Lovense Max 2 (which is one of his favorite toys!).

Why Cleaning Lovense Max 2 Is Crucial

We probably do not have to explain this to most of our readers, but we will anyhow because we never know who needs to read it. Sex toys need to be cleaned after every use, especially when they are toys used by people with penises who ejaculate.

After a play session, your toy will have been exposed to lubricant, bodily fluids, skin cells, and lint from sheets or towels. This lovely combination can become a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to infections (and no, we are not implying that you are dirty or gross, this is biology and it is not personal).

It is not only your personal health that is at risk here. These bacteria and other contaminants can cause your Lovense Max 2 to deteriorate much more quickly than it should, especially the inner sleeve that is made of a super soft and therefore porous material.

Lastly, a clean and well-cared-for sex toy simply looks, feels, and smells better (just like any sex partner). We know that cleanup is not the most fun part of any play date, but the future you will be glad that you took the time.

Prep Work

Alexander Graham Bell wrote that “before anything else, preparation is the key to success,” and that holds true here too.

Gather everything that you’ll need for cleaning your Lovense Max 2. This includes a (clean, soft, lint-free) cleaning cloth or two, mild fragrance-free soap, running water, and a towel. If you want, you can also make use of a specialized sex toy cleaner, a silica gel pack, and a very soft toothbrush — not your regular toothbrush and not a roommate’s or family member’s.

Remove the cap, and then remove the inner sleeve. Remember that the inner sleeve is made of very soft material, which is awesome for sensation but more than a little delicate when out of the protective case.

Close the Air Pump Vent (You can see it in the image above). The Lovense Max 2 has an Air Pump Vent, an Adjustable Air Vent, and a Quick Air Release. Be extra sure that the Air Pump Vent is closed; otherwise, you risk getting the internal electronics wet and that is not good for them.

Detailed Cleaning Process

Now you are ready to clean your Lovense Max 2! Don’t be intimidated. It may seem like a lot of words and a lot of steps, but anyone who has a history with sex toys will find this all very familiar.

1. Cleaning the Sleeve

Carefully remove the sleeve from the external casing. Check it over for any rips, tears, or discoloration. Rinse the sleeve with cool to lukewarm water — as many of us have learned, water that is warmer than body temperature makes semen coagulate, which makes cleaning much more difficult. Hot water can also damage the material of the inner sleeve.

The Lovense Max 2 has a waterproof rating of IPX 6, which means that it can tolerate splashes or even a few passes under the faucet, but it should not be submerged.

Pat the sleeve dry — do not rub or wring it — and let it finish air-drying on a clean towel. Because of the texture and softness of the material, it may be difficult to determine when it is fully dry so give it more time than you think it needs. It is not good for the toy if there is any moisture remaining when it is stored away.

2. Cleaning the Outer Casing

Verify that the Air Pump Vent is completely closed to prevent damage to the internal electronic components. Rinse the casing with lukewarm water to remove any leftovers.

Use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and mild fragrance-free soap or specialized sex toy cleaner to wash the outside of the casing. Rinse well with running water until all soap and suds are gone, and pat dry with a towel. As above, let the casing air-dry fully on a clean towel and then reassemble the Lovense Max 2.

3. Aftercare and Storage

Cleaning is only one part of caring for your sex toys. It’s always a good idea to recharge them before storing them; this helps keep the battery from draining to zero, and it also alerts you if there is anything wrong with the battery or charging cable (so you don’t discover this at a highly inopportune moment).

The charging port for the Lovense Max 2 is located at the bottom of the toy. You should always use the charging cable that came with it; even if you have other cables that look and feel compatible, they may have slightly different amperage and voltage and this could damage your Max 2.

Plug the charging cable into the charging port on the Lovense Max 2, and then plug the other end into a USB port on a power source such as a computer, charging dock, or wall outlet with an adapter. Watch for the indicator light to come on. It will change to solid green when the toy is fully charged, which takes about 100 minutes depending on the power source (wall outlets generally charge the quickest).

4. Storage Sense

Ensure that your Lovense Max 2 is completely dry before you reassemble it for storage. You can tuck a silica gel pack (the kind that comes with electronics, shoes, and all sorts of other things) into the sleeve as extra protection against moisture buildup. The Air Pump Vent should stay closed.

Pack your Max 2 in a soft fabric bag or hard-shell case that is large enough that you don’t have to bend or otherwise deform the toy, but also close-fitting enough to keep it from bouncing around. Put the charging cable and any other accessories in the bag or case along with the toy, but all sex toys should have their own storage bags. Store the sex toys in an area without a lot of light or extreme temperature changes.

Common Cleaning Mistakes to Avoid

You should have no problems if you follow the guidelines above, as well as the recommendations in the user manual and on the manufacturer’s website. Still, we’d like to share some no-nos that we’ve learned from our readers and in our own lives as well.

• Don’t use harsh detergents or soaps. These can damage the soft material of the inner sleeve of the Max 2. Also, they will leave chemical residue behind, especially on the textured sleeve. This can irritate both the masturbator and your genital skin, which does not sound like a good time.
• Make sure that the Air Pump Vent is closed before washing the Lovense Max 2. This protects the internal electronics that make this toy so much fun. The Max 2 is rated waterproof, but this presumes that the vent is closed during cleaning (as the manufacturer requires).
• Don’t use hot water. Hot water can damage the inner sleeve, and very hot water can damage the electrical components. Also, hot water makes semen congeal. This not only makes it more difficult to thoroughly clean the inner sleeve, but the additional effort can cause damage to the sleeve.
