Kink Aware: The Sub Drop
What goes on must come back down: the Sub Drop – what is it and how do you counteract its effects.
In our last Kink Aware blog we took a trip through Subspace Exploration, learning about all things submission, sub space and how to find it. What wasn’t covered was the aftereffects – the drop.
What is Sub Drop?
After the natural chemical rush that a BDSM scene can induce within the mind and body of the submissive, the body then begins to return to a baseline. By removing the hormones that triggered the physical and neurological state of subspace, the submissive can then enter Sub Drop.
Kinky toys to get you to Subspace????
Some individuals can engage in kinky sessions without any unpleasant manifestations occurring afterwards; however, others can experience the intense and often unpleasant, physical and mental phenomenon of Sub Drop.
Signs of Sub Drop:
- Physical aches and pains
- Mood swings
- Crying
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Irritability
- Fatigue
- Shivering
Coping with Sub Drop
Sub drop can come immediately after a session ends and up to 48 hours later, so its is important to know that this may happen. That is why Aftercare is so important.
What is Aftercare?
You’ve probably been engaging in aftercare unwittingly by cuddling, kissing, pillow talking, and hydrating, etc. But, by bringing aftercare to the forefront of your sexual conversations with your partner you will then consciously be able to discover what works for the both of you. For me, a gulp of water and a little snooze normally does the job. However, after more intense impact play or humiliation scenes, I do love a good cry, a cuddle, and a brew.
“Aftercare is the physical and emotional tasks you and your partner take after sex or other BDSM activities to make sure you’re both okay.”
Your own self-care routine post-coitus depends on how safe you feel, so if you fancy a hot bath but feel unable to run it yourself, ask your partner! Communication is key, before, during, and after sex.

Aftercare Ideas:
- Sleep
- Walk in nature
- Eat your favourite meal
- Listen to a podcast
- Bubble Bath
- Journal
- Stretch
Dom Space and Dom Drop:
These phenomena are not limited to submissive individuals. Dominants can also experience similar phenomena, known as Dom Space and Dom Drop where they enter the same flow state and mood drops as experience by their counterparts. We will cover this in later blogs, we haven’t forgotten you guys – watch this space!
