The Rose toy is all the rage these days, and there’s little wonder why. It’s been a long time since something truly revolutionary hit the sex toy market, but the Rose has managed to shake things up. It was introduced in 2019 by RoseToy.com, but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and soon, all major sex toy manufacturers (and plenty of minor ones too) had roses on their menu.
If you love your Rose toy as much as we do, you’ll surely need to recharge it well and often. Our resident sexologist, Sandra Larson, is going to share some tips and tricks for keeping your Rose ready, willing, and able.
Key Takeaways
- The Rose is a different kind of sex toy, but the process of recharging it is not all that different. You’ll first need to find the charging port. It’s often at the base of the Rose, and it can be a barrel port, a mini USB slot, or a magnetic connector.
- Once you’ve located the charging port and connected the cable, you will need to plug the cable into a power source. Most cables have a USB plug, which you can then plug directly into a USB port or into a wall outlet with a USB adapter.
- Most Rose toys will have a light that indicates that the toy is charging. Disconnect the cable when charging is finished.
In More Detail
We explained above that the first step is locating the charging port. This isn’t always as easy as it sounds! Rose toys are usually designed with aesthetics in mind, and this can mean camouflaging the charging port. Sometimes there will be a subtle little icon marking the port. Common charging port locations include the base of the Rose or near the control buttons. If all else fails, consult the user manual or the manufacturer’s website.
Once you have identified the port, you can determine what kind of connection you’re working with. If it looks like a little pinhole, this is a barrel plug. If it looks like a miniature USB port, well, then it is a micro-USB or USB-A port. And if it is two metal dots, then it is a magnetic connector. Connect the charging cable to the port on the Rose toy.

Next, you will need to connect the other end of the charging cable to a power source. Most modern charging cables have a USB plug, which you can connect to a port on your computer, a power bank, or any other USB port. If you prefer to charge through a wall outlet, which is usually more powerful and therefore will charge more quickly, you can use an adapter that plugs into the wall outlet.
Most Rose toys have an indicator light near the charging port. If the light does not come on, check your connections and make sure that they are all secure (magnetic chargers can be extra tricky here). If you have plugged the charging cable into your computer, you might need more “juice” and you can try a wall outlet instead.

Your indicator light may flash while the Rose toy is charging and become solid when it is fully charged, or it may be red while charging and green when fully charged, or it may indicate its status in a different way. You can always check your user manual or the manufacturer’s website to decode its signals. Disconnect the toy when it is completely charged. It’s now ready for use or for safe storage!
Different Rose toys have different battery storage capacities, and higher frequencies use more power. We can’t tell you how often you will need to charge the toy because it depends on individual use, but we can advise you to fill it back up after every use so it is always ready when you are!
Everything That You Need to Know About Connections
Read on if you’d like to learn more about the different connectors that your Rose toy may come with.
USB: The Classic
The Universal Serial Bus port, better known as USB, is ubiquitous. We know it and love it, so we’re not surprised to see it on a Rose toy. Sex toys usually come with either micro-USB or USB-C ports. And we know the drill. Plug one end into the device that needs to be charged, and the other end into a USB port on a computer, power bank, or wall outlet with an adapter. Ensure that both connections are secure and let it do its thing!

Magnetic Charging: It’s Modern
More and more devices, including sex toys, are being built with magnetic connectors on one end (and, of course, a USB connector on the other end). Magnetic connectors are especially great for sex toys like the Rose because they are fully enclosed. USB ports and barrel ports are open, which means that there is always the chance of contamination — and no one wants any sort of contamination near their sensitive bits!
If your Rose toy has a magnetic charging port, all that you have to do is line up the magnets on the charging cable with the magnets on the charging port. They will snap together and you can get the charging started!

We do love magnetic chargers, but to be fair, they aren’t perfect.
- Poor Contact: We said above that the magnets on the charging cable and charging port will just snap together. That’s what they are meant to do, but it can happen that they just don’t. You may have to try a few times to get a good connection. Even worse, you may not realize that they are not properly connected and you’ll come back to a Rose toy that hasn’t charged at all. Always look for the indicator lights to come on so that you know the connection is good.
- Fragile Connector: The actual cable for a magnetic connector is often slimmer than the cord on a USB connector and the connector itself is heavier, which is not a great combination. Be careful not to let the cable stretch or snap.
- Can’t Be Moved: Once a barrel plug or USB plug is inserted in the charging port, it will stay there until you remove it. However, it is way too easy to dislodge a magnetic connector. You’ll need to put it out of reach or where it can’t be disturbed.
- Slow Charging: Magnetic chargers can often be slower to charge than USB chargers (see above where we note that magnetic charging cables are often slimmer). This isn’t always an issue if you’re recharging your Rose toy before you put it away, but it’s not what you want when you’re ready to play!
- Compatibility: All micro-USB connectors fit all micro-USB ports, and all USB-C connectors fit all USB-C ports. The magnets on one kind of magnetic charger may be spaced just a little differently than the next one, so it doesn’t always work to swap cables between toys or other devices.
Troubleshooting Thorny Problems
We’ve explained in detail how to charge your Rose toy, but what to do if it isn’t charging the way it should be? First, check the user manual or manufacturer’s website — the site likely has a Frequently Asked Questions section, or user reviews may mention charging issues and solutions. If you’re confident that you’re connecting correctly, you can try some troubleshooting.
Check the charging cable. Look for kinks (not the fun kind) or frays, and be sure that the plugs at both ends are solid and in good condition. If the cable appears to be in poor condition, you should replace it to protect both yourself and your Rose toy. We recommend contacting the manufacturer to order a new cable, since that is the best way to ensure compatibility, but if you have another cable with the right connectors, you could try to use it to charge your Rose toy.

Next, inspect both connections. Check to see if the ports are firmly anchored and in good condition. Use a soft brush to sweep out any dirt or debris, since that could keep your connectors from actually connecting.
Make sure that your power source is actually putting out power! Try plugging in a device that you know works well. If you are charging via a USB port, move it to a wall outlet with an adapter, since not all USB ports put out enough power to get your Rose toy started.
“Turn it off and turn it on again” is a time-honored trick. Unplug the cable and reconnect it. Sometimes connections can be finicky even if they look fine; magnetic connectors are particularly known for this. Do the same for the connection to the power source.
More Care and Maintenance Tips
Lost or Broken Charger: You need a charger to power up your Rose toy! If yours is lost or broken, you will need a replacement. These are often available on the manufacturer’s website. If you have another sex toy from the same company that made your Rose, you can check to see if the charging cable is compatible. You can also try a compatible charging cable from another device, but be aware that even if it fits, it may not charge properly. Try this at your own risk: the chance of damaging your Rose toy by using an incompatible charger is small, but it could happen.
Faulty Charging Port: If the charging port is visibly damaged and your Rose toy is still under warranty, we recommend that you contact the manufacturer for a repair or replacement. If you’ve had your toy for a while and it’s no longer covered by the warranty, you can attempt to replace the port yourself. This operation is not as daunting as it may seem, so it is worth a try since your toy is unusable if you can’t charge it. There are plenty of YouTube videos that demonstrate how to replace a charging port on an electronic device (you don’t have to look for sex-toy-specific instructions).
Scratches: We do not recommend using a Rose toy if the silicone is scratched or damaged. Scratches can harbor bacteria or other contaminants, and no one wants to risk infection there. Sometimes it’s possible to repair a scratch, though. Wipe down the area with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Cut a piece of shrink tubing to size, cover the damaged area with it, and use a hair dryer to shrink it into place. Clean your toy thoroughly after this operation.
Loose or Missing Magnet: If one of the magnets on the connector or charging cable is loose, you can reattach it with super glue. If the magnet is completely missing and you can source a replacement, you can also attach the new magnet with super glue. Surprisingly, super glue is generally considered to be body-safe and is even used in emergency medicine.
If these tips do not fix what is ailing your Rose toy, check your user manual or the manufacturer’s website. You can also reach out directly to the manufacturer and/or retailer, especially if your Rose is still under warranty.
However, if this is fruitless, you may need to shop for a new Rose toy, and we are here to help you with that — as well as how to dispose of the dearly departed.
Happy vibing!
