Narration: While on my honeymoon, I had a sudden and crystal clear realization.

Jey and Max are sitting outside on a bench together, Jey is relaxing back into the bench’s cushion.

Jey is hit with a spark of inspiration.

Jey: You know what? I think I want to try going on a low dose of T!

Max: OH!! If you’re sure, I’ve got your back.

The two reach over the bench together to hold hands.

Narration: I’m in my mid-30s now. I have a lovely supportive spouse and things just felt right to start.

Jey and Max lean on one another lovingly.

Narration: However–

A much younger Jey appears suddenly, clearly very upset. Young Jey has longer bangs swept to one side and wears a vest with a bowtie and slacks.

Young Jey: But we said we’d never go on T!

Narration: An intrusive thought from my 25-year-old self screamed at me.

Jey looks on with a gentle smile.

The two sit together.

Jey: It’s okay though.

Young Jey: It’s not. I don’t want to change.

Jey: Listen, change can be scary, but what I needed at 25 is different than what I need at 35. It happens and it’s not a bad thing.

Jey raises an eyebrow jokingly.

Jey: Besides, I think leaving all my life decisions to my 25-year-old self is a bad idea actually.

Young Jey: HEY!

Young Jey looks grumpy and offended.

The page looks like a calendar month, with young Jey and Jey appearing on random days throughout.

Four days are crossed out and young Jey talks over top of them.

Young Jey: But we waited too long!

Jey: Also not true. I said I didn’t want to go on T then but why does that have to be the be all end all?

Jey moves forward a few days, pointing farther down into the week.

Jey: I don’t need to have my gender all figured out on some sort of time line.

Jey moves forward, over a week this time.

Jey: I can start now.

They move forward another few days, talking casually.

Jey: I can stop if I want.

A few calendar days later, Jey pokes their head in.

Jey: Then, I can even start again when I’m older.

Two weeks on the calendar later, Jey holds their hands up in excitement while young Jey looks on curiously.

Jey: Because transitioning does not have an expiry date.

Young Jey: I guess that’s true.

Jey puts a hand on young Jey’s shoulder and they look at one another.

Jey: But thank you, for waiting and really thinking about it.

Narration: Now that I’m almost two years on T and in my mid-30s it wasn’t nearly as scary as my younger self made it out to be.

Young Jey vanishes in a shroud of mist from under Jey’s hand.

Narration: I’m still me.

Jey looks up, bringing their hand to their chest and looking up.

Narration: Maybe even more me than I’ve ever been.

Still looking up, Jey closes their eyes and smiles contendedly.

Narration: Change is okay, I am not some rock to be categorized and placed in the correct box.

Jey notices hair appearing on their upper lip. An big exciting arrow points to it as Jey gasps!

They open their mouth to speak and the sounds come out clear, then cracked as Jey’s voice starts to get deeper.

Narration: I am alive, and part of living is continuously discovering myself.

A fully coloured open panel of Jey coming up a hill and resting their foot on a rock. Their hand shielding their eyes from the sun as they look off into the distance.
