Oh Joy Sex Toy – Nudist Night by Hien Pham
Hien Pham draws in a lushly rendered style that alternates between realistic illustrations and simplified cartoons in textured pencil lines. He uses the full spectrum of colors. This comic is populated with anthropomorphic characters.

Naked furry bodies casually hang out in a group setting, with one frazzled-looking bear-man named Hien sitting nervously and fiddling with a closed fan in his hands. He wears glasses and sports a mustache and bun on top of his head.
Narration: Yep! That’s me. You’re probably wondering how I’ve found myself surrounded by naked men in a cabin in the woods…
In a (fully clothed) flashback, a bunny man in glasses tells Hien, “I’m going to the beach this weekend.”
Eagerly, Hien leans in, asking “Ooh! Can I come?”
Narration: You see, earlier this year, I became part of a local nudist group by complete accident.
Arriving on the crowded beach naked with his bunny friend, Hien is shocked to realize, “I didn’t realize this was a whole group thing!!!!”
“Join us!” Calls a capybara jovially.
Narration: When this overnight retreat came up, I felt pretty hesitant, as it’s quite far beyond my comfort zone…
Hien fans himself nervously once the (still nude) group is assembled inside their cabin.
Narration: Still, I wanted to better understand social nudism, so I braced myself and committed to the agenda!

“I feel weird being on the outskirts of conversations…” Hien thinks as he awkwardly relocates across the room with his towel in hand. “Let’s try a different spot…”
He joins a capybara and meerkat in the kitchen, by a table laden with snacks.
“That was better,” he thinks, on the move again and fanning himself. “but my anxiety’s still through the roof… Maybe I’ll hide for a bit in the quet corner.”
He sits down to draw in his sketchpad at a long dining room table with an assortment of board game boxes on it.
Fretting to himself while sketching, he anxiously thinks, “Hien, it’s okay if you’re not in a socializing mood today… Maybe you could go for a walk? Or find your friends to hang with?”
The nude capybara peeks over his shoulder, asking, “What’cha drawing?”
“NOTHING INTROSPECTIVE OR SAD HAHAHA!” Hien jolts in embarrassed surprise and snaps his book shut.
Sitting down across from Hien at the table, the capybara asks, “You doing okay?”
“Yeah, just feeling a bit off so I’m trying to work it out in my journal.” Explains Hien as a small, naked group sits down at the other end of the table to play a game.

Narration: Despite struggling with social anxiety, I was still able to gain an appreciation for social nudism.
As Hien and the capybara chat, he begins to look calmer as he listens and sketches.
Narration: In my experience, conversations in gay male-dominated spaces can often feel like stepping stones toward getting someone to take their clothes off.
Across the room, a meercat, bunny, and water buffalo talk with energy.
Narration: In this space, that natural curiosity was sated as soon as we walked through the doors. There’s an emphasis on having conversations for conversations’ sake.
The doberman holds up a game box enthusiastically while the lion attempts (and seems to fail) to read the instructions.
Narration: This group’s specifically non-sexual environment was curated to take that a step further. It encourages everyone to find intimacy in platonic friendships and social connections.
Hien joins the game players while his body begins to dissolve upwardly into a pleasant, lava lamp-like goo.
Narration: There’s a noticeable body-image element, too. Without my clothes constantly rustling against my skin, at some point, I started to forget the shape of my body.

A montage crosses the page, showing a variety of different bodies all melting in happy, floating goo just as Hien’s did. The group sits around the table, joyfully playing their game and happily melting into the air.
Narration: The voice in my head that constantly compiles tier lists of who looks better than me and how I should feel bad about it ight never give up. But, around that table for just a moment… It went quiet.
Later and fully clothed to stay warm in the night air, the bunny and Hien take a stroll outside by phone flashlight.
“So, how are you going with the group?” The bunny asks.
With a shrug, Hien answers, “Not too bad…” He nervously scratches his neck as he continues, “My brain’s not in top form today, so I’m not connecting with folks as much as I’d like… But I can’t be a social butterfly all the time. I’m not gonna beat myself up for it.”
“That’s good.” His friend answers.

Chuckling nervously, Hien replies, “I’m grateful to get to experience social nudism in a safe and inclusive space. Even if there are things I do struggle with. Like physical touch is often where I find comfort… But I’m afraid if I ask for cuddles it would get too affectionate, I might get a boner and make everyone uncomfortable….”
“It’s not a big deal, you could cover up until it goes away.” The bunny says nonchalantly.
“I know… I just want to err on the side of caution…” Hien winces nervously, squeezing into the arm of his companion for reassurance. “It’s something I can work on for next time.” He looks calmer again as he says, “Ultimately, I’m glad there’s a space for me here. And there are friends I’ve made who I’m looking forward to getting to know better when my anxiety’s not in the way.”
Fully embracing into a hug, Hien exclaims, “For now, though, I’m gonna need several clothed hugs at least!”
“Alright.” Agrees the bunny, giving him a squeeze.
