8 Most Quiet Sex Positions

Most of us agree that sex is best when you can be as wild and loud as you want, but many of us also know that it isn’t always wise. Family and kids, roommates, neighbors, and house guests don’t need to get a live podcast.
You can turn on a white noise machine and stuff a towel under your door, but mechanics can only mask so much. Our staff of sex educators has concluded that the following eight positions are the least likely to be noisy.
1. Standing Doggy
Standing sex, like this standing doggy position, means that there’s no chance of the mattress squeaking or the headboard hitting the wall rhythmically. The biggest challenge is keeping yourselves quiet, because this position offers the opportunity for deep penetration and leaves hands free for clitoral stimulation.

Pro tip: It also works if either or both partners want to wear a butt plug for extra oomph.
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner stands facing a wall with legs slightly spread. They can brace their hands and arms against the wall for support.
- The penetrating partner stands behind the receiving partner, between their legs, and grasps their hips.
- The receiving partner bends their knees slightly and arches their back, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
2. The 69
69 is another good choice when you need to be discreet. Because there’s no thrusting, there’s no bed noise. Plus, both of you will have your mouths full in the very best way, so any moans will be muffled.

What We’re Doing
- Partner 1 lies on their back on the bed with legs slightly bent and slightly spread. They can put a small cushion under their head and neck for support (and to make breathing easier).
- Partner 2 half-lies/half-kneels on top of Partner 1, facing the opposite direction. They can support some of their body weight on their knees to give Partner 1 more freedom of movement.
- Partners align themselves as needed and perform oral sex on each other.
3. Lotus
The lotus position is seated, so there is no bed bouncing here. It is also a position with minimal thrusting, even though penetration can be deep, so the chair won’t be making any noise either. All four hands are generally free, so either partner can muffle the other if needed (which can actually be pretty hot if you play it right!).

In the classic lotus position, both partners have their legs crossed. This requires good core strength and balance; if that works for you, feel free to go for it, but we’re suggesting a slight modification here in the interests of not toppling over (which would be noisy!)
What We’re Doing
- The penetrating partner sits in a chair with their legs in front of them and feet flat on the floor.
- The receiving partner straddles the penetrating partner’s lap, facing them. The receiving partner crosses their legs.
- The penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in, and then grasps the receiving partner’s hips to help support them.
4. Missionary
One of the best things about missionary is that it works for every mood from tame to tempestuous. If you’re looking for some quiet sex, you’ll naturally want to keep things a little tamer, but you can still enjoy deep penetration and face-to-face intimacy. And speaking of face-to-face, you can silence any moans with kisses.

What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner lies on their back on the bed with legs spread and slightly bent. They can place a firm pillow under their hips for support or a better angle.
- The penetrating partner lies on top of the receiving partner, facing them and between their legs.
- The receiving partner arches their back and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
5. Spooning
Spooning is comfortable, cozy sex without a lot of bouncing and thrusting. This is lovely on lazy mornings! It’s also great when you need to keep the volume down because there’s not a lot of bouncing and banging.

Either partner can use a small vibrator for additional clitoral stimulation, and the receiving partner’s body should muffle any buzzing.
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner lies on their side with knees bent, curled into a half-moon position.
- The penetrating partner lies on their side behind the receiving partner, facing the same direction and curled around them.
- The receiving partner backs their bottom up against the penetrating partner, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
6. Mutual Masturbation
If you want to have sex in your bed (standing sex and chair sex are great in their own ways, but sometimes you just want to be in your bed!) without worrying about noises caused by thrusting or banging, mutual masturbation fits the bill.

This is actually a very intimate way to have sex because masturbation is an extremely personal act that you’re sharing with your partner; plus, showing each other exactly how you like to pleasure yourselves is educational! (This applies to straight, gay, and lesbian couples equally.)
What We’re Doing
- Lie in the bed in whatever way is most comfortable for both of you. Lying head-to-foot or side-by-side lets you see each other best.
- Start touching yourselves. You can incorporate sex toys if you are both comfortable with that.
7. Cowgirl
We like the classic cowgirl when we need to keep quiet because even though the receiving partner can ride as vigorously as they want, they’re bouncing off the penetrating partner and not off the bed so there’s little noise.

It’s also an ideal position to experiment with restraining and muffling the penetrating partner if this is something that you’d both enjoy.
What We’re Doing
- The penetrating partner lies on their back on the bed. Legs can be straight or slightly bent, and they can put a small cushion under their back for support or a better angle.
- The receiving partner straddles, kneels, or squats over the penetrating partner.
- The receiving partner arches their back, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
8. Face Sitting
This oral sex position also generally does not result in a lot of bed noise. And the receiving partner is the only one who needs to be careful about being noisy because the giving partner’s mouth will be otherwise occupied. If you aren’t fans of 69 (or just not in the mood), this is a fine alternative; you can take turns pleasing each other.

What We’re Doing
- The giving partner lies on their back on the bed. They can use a small, firm cushion under their neck and head for support and a little more breathing room.
- The receiving partner kneels or squats over the giving partner’s face (they can face forwards or backwards). The receiving partner can support some of their body weight with their legs.
- The giving partner performs oral sex on the receiving partner.
