As you can see in the image below, the Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag comes in a plain, simple, one-use plastic bag. Attached to it is a Stockroom identification tag. Though no instructions are provided, using gags of this type can actually be fairly easy. But that said, learning how to use its D-rings to make it comfortably fit the wearer can be a little frustrating at times.

How to Use a Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag

As I just explained, The Stockroom Leather O-Ring Gag takes a novel approach by replacing the buckle-and-belt-hole arrangement with a set of matching D-rings. If you are already familiar with this arrangement, then good news, playing with this one should be nearly effortless. However, if you aren’t used to this style, then you are going to have to spend time practicing until you’re comfortable with how to adjust it.

You may have noticed that, unlike many other BDSM gear I have reviewed for The Stockroom, I only gave their Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag three out of five stars. The reason I did this is because of this often frustrating arrangement. Now, I could have put in my usual caveat that whether or not you like buckles is a matter of personal taste.

But after careful consideration, I felt that, as D-ring buckles are quite rare—at least in regards to BDSM gags—a majority of people may unnecessarily struggle with getting the Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag to fit comfortably.

My Personal Experience

Though my partner and I tend to prefer natural—i.e., leather, etc— BDSM toys over synthetic ones, we both agreed there’s something a little bit off about The Stockroom Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag. Not that it’s a bad toy; it’s just not an especially great one, either. I’ve already gone over how difficult its D-ring arrangement can be to manage. Still, the leather-wrapped center ring was frequently uncomfortable due to its metal rigidity.

Sure, wrapped in leather is better than a gag made with just a bare metal ring, though that raises another issue: taste. Say what you want about silicone, but it’s pretty neutral in the flavor department. Not so with leather, which we found tasted a little … well, “funky” after a while. Another positive about silicone gags is that they are easily cleanable and, afterward, are good as new to use again and again.

Unfortunately, that’s not true about leather gags, as they cannot be completely sterilized, so not only do they require extra care, but you shouldn’t share them with other people, as there’s a good chance the first person might pass along something unpleasant to whoever uses it next.

The Stockroom’s Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag is extremely simple, which might also explain its very low price tag of $32. Essentially, it’s nothing but a somewhat narrow, very thin length of leather with an adjustable D-ring setup at one end and a set of steel grommets supporting a leather-wrapped metal ring in its center. No matter which model you get, each of the three available sizes looks and acts pretty much identically.

Material

The Leather O-Ring Gag is made from leather with a smattering of metal pieces, including its pair of adjustable D-Rings, the grommet holding them in place, and the other two, which do the same for the gag’s middle, leather-wrapped steel ring. While the leather isn’t the thickest, it still seems durable and pleasant to the touch. Having said that, the leather’s thickness does make working with its D-rings a touch difficult, though not so much as to make adjusting the size impossible.

Build Quality and Dimensions

Overall, The Stockroom Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag is impressively made, showing again why the BDSM community has made them one of their all-time favorite toy makers and retailers. Not trying to—at all-potentially soil their stellar reputation, I have to say this particular product didn’t quite live up to my expectations—particularly when compared to many of their inarguably brilliant and wildly hot gags. If I had my choice, I would have preferred it 100% if it had an easier-to-use, far more traditional buckle setup.

It’s also worth noting, as safety must and should be the priority for every BDSM toy maker (period), getting someone out of a Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag can take a distressingly long amount of time. Dangerous?  Not really, but in an emergency, seconds—and anything that can’t be removed ASAP—is a toy I can’t really recommend.

Ease of Use

As you may have guessed, though The Stockroom’s Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag is finely crafted, it’s not exactly effortless to put on or take off. Even after practicing—practicing and practicing and practicing (you get the picture)—my partner and I found ourselves swearing at it (and each other). Without its D-ring setup, the toy is good, if not great, but with it, I’d have to say it’s bordering on disappointing.

Versatility

Gags aren’t what you would call multipurpose BDSM playthings. Not that they ever should be, as they are specifically made to be as safe as they are comfortable. So its lack of versatility is more a positive than a negative.

Minor Issues I Found During Testing

I feel quite guilty wagging my proverbial finger at The Stockroom as I truly, honestly consider them my all-time favorite BDSM toy makers and retailers. Though their Leather O-Ring Mouth Gag wasn’t my cup of tea, it hasn’t diminished my respect for them one teeny, weeny bit. It’s that if I could, I’d like to tell them if they just swap out their leather center ring for silicone AND give it a more classic buckle arrangement, then I’d be one very happy—and always kinky—camper.
